To race in MA (Motorcycling Australia ) events in Victoria you must first join a Motorcycling Australia, Victoria ( MAV ) affiliated club if you live in Victoria. You call the MAV on ph 03 9482-5422 or click the here, they will send you a book on how to get started. You then apply through your selected clubs secretary for an MA Race License. An MA full race license costs $ 270.00 per year for seniors and $ 240.00 for juniors. First time applicants must pass a written test which is easy. To race MA events you will need a Transponder. These are used to get exact times and instant results. They can be booked and hired on the day for $ 50.00 or purchased through MAV for $ 400.00.

At many race meetings these days you can pay $44.00 for a competition day license. This is a great way to go if you want to try out racing to see if you like it. If you are thinking of doing this it would be wise to call the events promoters ( usually a club ) and confirm that you can enter on the day and get a one day MA license. Remember that you must have the correct riding gear.<>

Motocross
To find out were the race meetings are ask your club, bike shops and at practice tracks. Once you enter one event you get sent entry forms to lots of other meetings. Some Motorcycle clubs are more MX focused than others asked about this before picking one to join.

Supercross
If you want to race Supercross events in Victoria you have to get Supercross accreditation from MAV. Its like a school and is held at the Broadford Motorcycle complex on certain Saturdays. Call MAV for firm dates

03 9482 5422.

Enduro
To race in Enduros you must have your MA license and a registered bike (Vic rec rego OK) and a road motorcycle license.  At most Victorian Enduros they have what is called the Rally Class were you get to ride most of the course (they leave out the really hard bits) the racers use, but you are not racing so you don't need to have the MAV race license. To ride rally class at an Enduro you need a MAV One day Recreation license which is issued on the day at a cost of $ 15.00. You still need a registered bike and road motorcycle license. You would need to pay the club their Rally class entry fee and day club membership fee.

Enduros event are a mixture of trail times and special test. Trail time is the time taken between controls you need to going at a steady pace not to loose trail time between these controls. Once you loose trail time you carn,t make it back up. The results are usually decided by the special test times. Once you get to a special test you need to go as fast as you can. There might be 5-8 different tests during the event. Special test are short timed sections usually about 10m or so in length, they might be MX style or a timed section along the trail.

Cross Country
Cross Country racers are on a set loop around 15-20 minutes per lap. The loop will have a variety of terrain and you need to do as many laps as you can over the 3 hours of the race. Because they are held on private property your bike does not have to be registered and you don't need a road motorcycle license but you must have an MAV Race License.

Sprints
Sprints are short timed runs, usually 5 to 20 minutes through varying terrain, you have 4 or 5 runs stopping at the end of each lap as opposed to a cross country were you keep going.  The time is totaled to determine the winner. Like Cross Country events, sprints are held on private property so you don't have to have rego or road motorcycle license but you do need the race license.

Club Events
A lot of Clubs have there own internal race meetings where you don't need a MA license only a license issued by that club. Ask about events the club holds before joining.
