Registration in other states
There are many differing opinions on the need for Dirtbike Registration, basically you need full road registration to ride legally anywhere (except on private property). Motorcycle riders must have a current Motorcycle license or learners permit. According to the Law, a bush track high in the mountains is the same as a main city Street. Generally out in the bush, the police on their KTM,s are not worried about indicators and the like, but the bike must have full road registration and the rider licienced.

How to get Full Road Registration
To get legal road registration the bike must be Roadworthy and have a Compliance Plate fitted. The Compliance Plate is a silver plate usually pop riveted to the head stem and notes the Frame No. and that it complies with numerous ADR, s ( Australian Design Rules ). If your bike does not have Compliance and the bike was manufactured after July 1988 you cannot get full road registration. On MX, s, RMX, s and most WR, s you will not get Rego no matter how roadworthy the bike is so keep this in mind when buying a used bike.

Road Reg costs approximately $ 350 per year. So once again keep this in mind when buying a second hand bike.

If your bike has a Compliance Plate fitted all you need is a Roadworthy Certificate and $ 300 to $400 to get full road registration. The bike has to be sighted by Vicroads so you will have to make an appointment to see them with your bike, the money, some form of identification and a current Roadworthy Certificate. Call Vicroads on 131177.
